First, I am a big Tom
Clancy fan. My father had given my Hunt
for Red October
after it was out in paperback and I read it in a weekend, ever
since then I have read almost all of his major books (I am still
in the process of reading his newest Rainbow Six).
If you haven't read
any of his books I suggest that you start with Hunt
for Red October,
it is an action packed, edge of your seat, page turner. From
there I suggest you read them in order.
Red Storm Rising would have made a great television miniseries.
Patriot Games mixes Jack Ryan with the British Royals and IRA.
Cardinal in the Kremlin is a great story about espinage with some chilling
descriptions of KGB torture techniques.
Clear and Present Danger ~ black ops against Columbian drug smugglers
cut off by politicos in Washington leads Ryan to the Columbia
jungles to help rescue the survivors.
The Sum of All Fears ~ terrorists with a nuclear bomb, need I say
more.
Without Remorse is the only book that is pretty much a stand
alone book. It introduces to where Mr. Clark is coming from.
Debt of Honor
is about a radical Japanese government trying to regain it's
WWII honor. Leads Jack Ryan to the White House.
Executive Orders ~ our greatest fear, a biological attack on
our shores.
Rainbow Six ~
Mr. Clark gets to set up his own shop.

Next is Patrick O'Brian's
Aubrey-Marturin adventures. I have just started into this series,
which is up to 19 volumes, about a British Naval Officier, Jack
Aubrey, and his friend Dr. Marturin as they serve together through
the Napoleanic Wars. I have only read the first two but the series
has had rave reviews and I am looking forward to reading them
all.

Midnight in the Garden on Good and Evil John Berendt's look into the
characters in and around Savanah society with a murder thrown
in for good measure. If you want to know what the rich in Savanah
(or for that matter Charleston) are really like pick up this
book.

Blue Dot Carl Sagan's
book that continues on from Cosmos about life on earth.
Also, if you have seen the movie I would recommend his fiction
work Contact. I have not read it yet but if as usual the
movie is half as good as the book then it is probably a great
read.

Anne Rice's two series
I would recomend are Mayfair Witches series and the of course
the Vampire Cronicles.

Snow Falling on Cedars David Guterson's murder mystery that delves
into lost love, racism and post-war feelings in Pacific Northwest
town.

A Working Girl Can't Win a collection of poetry by Deborah Garrison that
I gave to my wife. A great collection for the "Soccer Mom"
in you life.

For some great British
style humor it is always fun to go to Douglas Adams five book
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy. If you are into Monty
Python or Red Dwarf this is a good series for you.
